So we made it! The Corona Fastnet Short Film Festival is back for it’s second year with a very exciting short film programme and some very special guests. We seem to have made an impression out there! Our submissions are up from last year by a whopping 50%. Our commitment to screen every film during the festival is already under pressure, but as problems go, it’s one of the better ones. As you walk around Schull during the festival, keep an eye out in the shops, restaurants and bars… you never know what might be on or where.

This year, as part of our ongoing commitment to the development of the art and craft of filmmaking, our festival explores the world of script and it’s interpretation by key contributors to the filmmaking process. We are honoured to have Jack Gold, Tony Barry, Patricia Coogan O’Dell, Ian Power, Steve Coogan, Pat McCabe, Kirsten Sheridan, Gerard Stembridge, Andrew Freedman, Donal Beecher, Macdara Kelleher, Don Slyne, Mark Doherty, Chris O’Dell, Rob Flanagan, Greg Dyke and others among us, all professionals working in the film industry and all sharing their unique perspectives on the importance of the script in helping them to make the decisions necessary for their craft. IMCINE, the Mexican Film Institute, are presenting a special opening night collection of some of the best shorts from their catalogue from 2009. Synth Eastwood have gathered some of the best animated short films from around the world into one 90 minute programme, courtesy of the Darklight Festival, and we are delighted to be presenting the fruits of their collaboration. We also have our first local interest programme with Jack Gold’s Catholics, Gerald O’Brien’s local history project A Letter From Home, James Clark’s 1959 documentary about life in Crookhaven, An Irish Village, Helen Selka’s documentary I Love Schull and SULT, an arts initiative from ten years ago which many Schull residents have very fond memories of.

For a full breakdown of what happens where and when, see the downloadable pdf at the top of this message.

Forward this link to your friends and let’s make sure this year’s festival is a massive success.

Contact our box office on 028 28600 or email info@fastnetshortfilmfestival.com
See you in Schull!

The Launch of the 2nd Corona Fastnet Short Film Festival Programme took place at The Bodega in Cork City last month and a fantastic night was had by all who attended. The event saw some of our Patrons, Supporters, Film Makers and a great representation from Schull itself at the party. Author, Director and Patron of the Festival Gerard Stembridge, The Mayor of Cork, Michael Barry of Barry and Fitzwilliam, Tony Barry, Maurice Seezer, Helen Wells and Pauline Cotter entertained us interspersed with Submission Film Clips. The evening continued with live music from Fergus O’Farrell and Interference and the party continued well into the night. An event not to be missed!

The Corona Fastnet Short Film Festival committee are in the thick of things right now finalizing an amazing programme for 2010. Yes, Pat McCabe, Irish writer of standing, has confirmed. He is a prolific writer of such books as ‘The Butcher Boy’ and ‘Breakfast on Pluto’ to mention a few. Both of these were brought to the big screen and his knowledge of the Book to Screen to Film process is a conversation not to be missed. As this years festival is concentrating on ‘Script’ having Pat McCabe visiting us is a great coup for the festival. Our complete programme for 2010 will be posted on our website www.fastnetshortfilmfestival.com very shortly. Another interesting programme to watch out for is, our inclusion of Mexican short film. IMCINE have put together a great selection of Mexican short films which should appeal to everyone. There is so much more going on you will just have to come and see for yourself. I dare you to enjoy it.

World renowned Irish Novelist Patrick McCabe has added his full support to the Corona Fastnet Short Film Festival and has committed to taking part. Author, Director and Patron of the Festival, Gerard Stembridge, has also committed to contributing as has Jack Gold, who famously filmed the feature film Catholics in and around Baltimore and Cape Clear in 1973. Young Irish Director, Ian Power will also contribute, showing a selection of his short films and exclusive clips from his upcoming feature film The Runway, recently shot in West Cork.

Patrick McCabe is a renowned Irish Novelist best known for his dark novels set in contemporary Ireland. His books include The Butcher Boy and Breakfast on Pluto, both shortlisted for the Booker Prize and filmed by Neil Jordan. He has written a children’s book, The Adventures of Shay Mouse, and numerous radio plays broadcast by RTE and the BBC. His recent novel Emerald Germs of Ireland, originally a radio series for RTE, is a black comedy featuring matricide and his novel Winterwood was named the 2007 Hughes & Hughes, Irish Independent Irish Novel of the Year. Patrick McCabe is a renowned reader of his own work, and we can look forward to an entertaining evening in his company during the festival.

On 27th May 2010 for four days, Schull will go short film mad, screening short films at various venues, (including the 100 seater mobile cinema), running workshops for film makers of all ages, hosting interviews with various famous national and international film personnel and many more fringe events.

The Corona Fastnet Short Film Festival is an independent festival, dedicated to bringing together established and first-time filmmakers to celebrate the short film. The element of competition is not paramount and while the prizes are significant, the screening of as many as possible of the entrant’s films in a public arena is far more important. Participants will have the opportunity to meet established film makers and take part in workshops as well as viewing the work of established filmmakers.

This year there is a special prize of €2,500 for the best young filmmaker aged 22 years or younger. The Best of Festival Award is open to all filmmakers over 18 years of age and also carries a prize of €2,500. There will be additional cash prizes of €250 for Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Drama, Best Comedy, Best Documentary, Best Animation, Best Original Music, Best Cinematography and Best Experimental/ Dance.

This year’s festival promises to be even bigger and better than last year. We still have a few surprises up our sleeve! Keep an eye on our website for further information and announcements: www.fastnetshortfilmfestival.com
